What To Expect In Your First Therapy Session For Perimenopause And Menopause

If you are thinking about starting therapy, there is a good chance you have already spent weeks, months, or even years trying to figure things out on your own.

Maybe you have read the books, listened to the podcasts, talked to and been dismissed by your doctor, or spent countless late nights searching online for answers. You know hormones are part of the picture, but you still do not feel like yourself. You may be wondering if therapy can actually help or if you will even know what to say once you get there.

The good news is that you do not need to have it all figured out before your first therapy session.

What If I Do Not Know What To Talk About?

This is one of the most common concerns people have before starting therapy.

Many women begin counseling because they feel overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, anxious, disconnected, or unlike themselves. They often tell me things like, "I do not feel like myself anymore," or "I know something is wrong, but I cannot explain it."

That is enough.

Your first therapy session is not about having all the answers. It is about beginning a conversation and creating a safe, supportive space where we can start making sense of what you are experiencing.

What Happens During The First Therapy Session?

Your first session is an opportunity for me to get to know you and your story.

We will talk about what has been bringing you to therapy, what challenges you have been facing, and what you hope might feel different in your life. We may discuss anxiety, relationship stress, life transitions, family dynamics, emotional overwhelm, or the unique challenges that can come with perimenopause and menopause.

There is no pressure to share everything at once. Therapy is not one size fits all, and our work will be personalized to your needs and goals.

Will We Talk About More Than Hormones?

Absolutely.

While hormonal changes can have a significant impact on mental health, emotional health, and physical health, many women discover there is more happening beneath the surface. Perimenopause and menopause often intersect with identity shifts, changing relationships, caregiving responsibilities, family wounds, grief, and questions about who you are becoming.

My approach is not focused on reducing you to a list of symptoms. Instead, we explore the whole story. Together, we connect the dots between your experiences, emotions, relationships, and current challenges so you can better understand what is contributing to your distress.

How Will I Know If Therapy Is Working?

Many clients notice meaningful shifts when they begin to feel understood and supported.

Over time, therapy can help you gain greater clarity, emotional steadiness, self trust, and confidence. You may find yourself responding differently to stress, communicating your needs more effectively, setting healthier boundaries, and feeling more connected to yourself.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is helping you feel more grounded, more supported, and more like yourself again.

What Makes Therapy Different During Perimenopause And Menopause?

One of the biggest challenges women face during this stage of life is feeling misunderstood.

You may have been told that what you are experiencing is simply a normal part of aging or that it is "just hormones." Too often it gets minimized, normalized, or explained away.  Those explanations often fail to capture the emotional complexity of this transition.

As someone who has personally navigated perimenopause and menopause and is a Certified Menopause Specialist, I understand how disorienting this season can feel. We are underinformed and underserved. Therapy provides a place to explore not only what is changing, but who you are becoming through the process.

Do I Need To Be Ready Before Starting Therapy?

No.

You do not need a plan. You do not need the right words. You do not need to know exactly what you need help with.

You simply need a willingness to start.

Therapy is a collaborative process. We figure it out together, one conversation at a time.
